January 2020

The Orchestra
The year 2019 saw The Vesta Orchestra into a new era. We began our journey towards becoming a symphony orchestra, with the chamber orchestra taking on larger sized concerts and private performances.
We are currently a 35-man orchestra, but at the moment can only perform as a 22 man chamber orchestra due to rehearsal cost and remuneration for our musicians, and also due to substandard instrument quality of our other musicians.
It is our hope that these issues are sorted out this year, as we hope to secure corporate sponsorship, which would help cover these costs and expenses.

The AfriClassical Concert Series

The series kicked off to a rousing start at The Terra Kulture Arena, Victoria Island, Lagos and was very well received by the audience. Our partnership on the series with Terra Kulture allows us use of their hall at no cost, with an agreement to split ticket revenue 50/50.

With this in place, we have the next concert date set for the 28th February 2020. Subsequent tentative dates are May, July, September, December 2020.

We are currently curating works from composers all over the continent, with a focus on South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana for our upcoming concerts and hope to have a few colleagues from these countries perform with us in the course of the year.

Classical Wednesdays/Sundays Series

Even as we hope to showcase our African classical and highlife composers, we are keen on continuing our classical music concert series for the audience we have built up over the years.

Our Classical Sundays and Classical Wednesdays Series will continue with concerts in March, June and October 2020 to a small audience of 50-100 at a chosen venue in Lagos.

Pocket Concert Series

Starting on 30th January 2020, we will begin a pocket concert series at private residences in Lagos to a select audience of potential sponsors. The concerts will feature the Vesta Ensemble (9 musicians), classical, highlife and contemporary music. We will hold these on request and hope in this way to capture the attention of the right audience, which would provide us with the support we need for the AfriClassical concert series and other future projects.

Projects for 2020

  • We hope to secure a rehearsal and recording studio, which would allow us to record these African classical works we are curating.

  • We are looking to build a concert app, which our audience members and supporters can download and subscribe to. Music recorded in the studio will be available to purchase and download on this app. Information on concerts and tickets would also be available on this app.

  • We will establish a Friends of Vesta Initiative, which would allow members of the public support us financially before we secure corporate sponsorship. This, we hope, would take care of some of the costs incurred in running these concerts.

  • We look forward to having some of our colleagues from orchestras in South Africa and Ghana join us for our May or December 2020 concert, so that the series truly embraces and reflects the music of composers around the continent, and not just in Nigeria.

  • As the AfriClassical Concert Series ends in 2020 in Lagos, we hope to thereafter take it to Abuja and eventually abroad (UK and Europe), as the requests for this are coming in regularly.

We would like to thank you for your support over the last year. We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to your continued support in 2020, as we embark on this exciting and most rewarding cultural endeavour.
